MoP®: principles, practices, and procedures for successful portfolio management (MoP®)
PMO practitioners have chosen MoP because they’re working at a portfolio level – within a Portfolio Management Office or an Enterprise PMO (ePMO). In this type of role, it is important to understand how portfolio management determines which projects and programmes an organisation decides to do and when.
There’s long been a saying that portfolio management is about doing the right projects and project management is about doing the projects right.
For PMO practitioners with minimal experience in portfolio management, the Foundation level is the place to start. For the more experienced, and especially those working in PMO management, the Practitioner level should also be undertaken.
For a PMO practitioner, it is important to understand some of the key themes such as investment appraisals, business case development and portfolio prioritisation.
MoP is particularly useful if you are setting up a Portfolio Office or organisation-wide PMO and are looking for best practice to inform your approach to implementation.
MoP® (Management of Portfolios) is comprised of principles, techniques, and practices that will assist your organization in the successful adoption of portfolio management.
MoP is concerned with two issues:
- how to choose the optimal projects and programmes to suit your organization’s strategic objectives
- how to execute them to optimize value for customers and other stakeholders.
It focuses on the change delivered by project and programme management as a whole, rather than the work of individual initiatives.
MoP is closely aligned with PRINCE2 and MSP. It helps senior executives and decision-makers to understand how portfolio management can maximize return on investment, and start and sustain transformation.
PeopleCert have two MoP® certifications:
- Management of Portfolios (MoP®) – Foundation
